Random short take #102. You’ll see from the age of some of these stories that this one has been in drafts for far too long.
- I really enjoyed this article over at El Reg – Memories fade. Archives burn. All signal eventually becomes noise. I’m getting older, and I’m thinking about this stuff more and more.
- Speaking of archiving (and useful media for dumping stuff on, Sony has quit the recordable Blu-ray disc market. The company had already exited the consumer market, so this seems like it was inevitable. I’m weirdly nostalgic for the optical disc era.
- Speaking of archive media, Curtis put out a handy podcast (and accompanying blog post) on the reality of cloud vs tape for active archives. Definitely worth checking out.
- Speaking of people who know way more about data protection than I do, Preston put together and great article comparing pre-sales engineering and product management. I’ve done both during my career (but only a fraction of what Preston has done) and this article really resonated with me.
- In some good news, ESXi Free is back!
- Want some PR news? I thought as much. Datadobi reimagines how enterprises can transform unstructured data into a valuable asset.
- In other PR news, Arcitecta has won the 2025 NAB Show Product of the Year Award. Cool company doing cool stuff. I hope to publish some more on them soon.
- I love streaming boxes, and this article caught my eye – Who’s the laggard? Comparing TV streamer boxes. The streaming device market is a little different in Australia, but this was still useful.
